April 12, 1904 - Carroll Sentinel - About three o'clock Tuesday morning of last week Grandpa J. A. Gerken passed quietly to the hereafter, at the ripe age of 86 years. He was never in all those long years troubled with any serious illness and was always jolly and lively to the last.

Only a short week before his demise he was as well as usual, and death is attributed to old age. Funeral was held last Thursday from the Presbyterian church, Rev Ringgold officiating, and interment made in the Wheatland township cemetery.

He leaves a widow and several grown sons and daughters to mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father, who have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community. May he rest in peace.
