Sept 13, 1904 - Carroll Sentinel - J.H. Kelly, for nearly thirty years a resident of this city, died at his home in the Second ward Saturday about noon of dropsy. He has long been a familiar figure in Carroll, for years being employed as bailiff at every term of court, and was well known. Funeral services were held at the Masonic hall Sunday afternoon, the services being in charge of Signet Lodge, A.F. and A.M., of which deceased had long been a member.

John H. Kelly was born at Noridgewock, Me., December 7, 1835. During his young manhood he worked on the Mississippi river, floating logs. April 1, 1872, he was married to Caroline Goar at Norristown, Minn. In 1875 the family moved to this city, where they have resided ever since with the exception of two years and a half in Arkansas. There Mr. Kelly, besides losing his health, also lost his only son, and a few years after their return to Carroll their daughter Ella died.

Two other children survive him. They are Mrs. Frank Ruddy and Mrs. J.H. McClellan, both of this city. They, with his devoted wife, have the heartfelt sympathy of all his friends. Other relatives are three sisters, Mrs. M.D. Madden of Lyons, Iowa; Mrs. Thomas Riley of Norwalk, Iowa; and Mrs. John Haines of Madison, Wis.

His father, mother, one sister, and two brothers preceded him to the great beyond.
