Nov 20, 1941 - Carroll Times -- Mrs. Elizabeth Hess, widow of J.P. Hess, pioneer Carroll banker, died at her home 203 South Court Street at 3:40 p.m Wednesday after being in impaired health for many years. Oct. 6, 1935, Mrs. Hess suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage and for the succeeding six years she had been confined to her home and wheelchair. Tuesday of this week a decided change became apparent in her condition and within 24 hours, she had succumbed to complications. Her age was 80 years.
Funeral services will be held at the Ss Peter and Paul church at 8:30 Saturday morning with the Rev L Schenkelberg officiating as celebrant of the solemn high requiem mass. Burial will be in the family lot in the church cemetery.
Mrs Hess was well known in the Carroll vicinity, having lived here since she was a young woman. Her husand who was at the head of the Carroll county state bank for many years, was president emeritus of the institution at the time of his death Jan 13, 1933.
Mrs. Hess was born Elizabeth Hillman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hillman, at New York City, Jan. 15, 1861. Her early childhood was spent in New York and New Jersey. At the age of eighteen she came with her parents and their family from Passaic, N.J., to Mt. Carmel where her parents opened and operated the general store. They later returned to the East.
Mrs. Hess was living at Mt. Carmel at the time of her marriage Feb. 28, 1881, to Mr. Hess, who was then teaching the Mt. Carmel School. Shortly afterward they came to Carroll, where Mrs. Hess has lived since that time. Mrs. Hess was the mother of ten children. John, the oldest, died in infancy. The surviving daughters and sons are: Miss Tresa Hess, Miss Mayme Hess, George J. Hess, Mrs. J.B. Dopheide, (Agnes), Mrs. F.D. Lewis (Clara), Miss Catherine Hess, Mrs. Lillian Reinhart, Carl J. Hess and Genevieve Hess, all of whom reside in Carroll. She also leaves twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Her surviving brothers and sister are: Petor Hillman, Paterson, N.J.; Bernard Hillman, Glenn Rock, N.J.; Charles Hillman, Los Angeles; and Mrs. Mary Klotzbach, also of Los Angeles. Mrs. Hess was a devout member of the Catholic church and in her younger years had been very active in the affairs of the Christian Mothers Sodality and the Missionary Society of SS. Peter and Paul's parish. She was amply fortified with all the rites of the Catholic Church at the time of her death.
