Jan 25, 1988 - Carroll Daily Times - Mrs. Cora Ross, 97, of Carroll and formerly of Des Moines, and the widow of the late Heck Ross died on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Carroll Health Center where she has lived for the past several years. The Rosses owned and operated the Heck Ross Clothing Store in Des Moines with their son, Jack, for many years. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll, with the Rev. Marvin Arnpriester of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Catherine Holley will be organist. Burial will be at the Carroll City Cemetery. Visitation will be today after 5 p.m. at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Memorials in her honor may be given to the Methodist Church or the Shriners Crippled Children's Fund.
Mrs. Ross was born on March 8, 1890, at the family home at 615 N. Clark St., Carroll, the daughter of John B. and Augusta H.C. (Kasdorf) Mohler. On March 16, 1909, she and Heck Ross were married in Des Moines. The Rosses owned and operated the Heck Ross Clothing Store in Des Moines, with their son, Jack, for many years. Her husband was mayor of Des Moines from 1949 to 1950 and Cora was Des Moines first lady. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carroll and a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
While living in Des Moines, she was a member and past president of the Federated Women's Club and a member and past president of the Federated Garden Club. She was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church while in Des Moines where she taught a boys Sunday School class and had charge of the youth program and sang in the Church choir from 1920 to 1926.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Leona Ross of Des Moines, and a close friend, Lucia Fox of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Jack Ross, and a sister, Wilma L. Mohler.
