April 30, 1945 - Carroll Times - Mrs. J.B. Mohler succumbed at her home 615 North Clark street, at 6:30 this morning, her death occuring 10 weeks after her husband had passed away. Mrs. Mohler, who was 80 years old, had been in declining health for some time and bedfast since March 28. She had lived in Carroll county for 71 years and at her present home for 35 years. Funeral services are to be at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Huffman Funeral home, where the body is resting until the time of the rites, and burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery. The Rev. Robert M Peters, minister of the Methodist church, will officiate.
Mrs Mohler was born Augusta H.C. Kasdorf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Fred Kasdorf, Oct 10, 1858, in Germany. Her parents were farmers in their native land. Mrs. Mohler was only five years old when the family emigrated to America and located in Chicago. She was a girl of 13 at the time of the famous Chicago fire on Oct 8, 1871. Mrs Mohler had told of escaping from the fire with only the clothes she was wearing. She remembered how people hastily buried their furnishings and other possessions as the only means of saving them from the flames.
In 1871 she came to Carroll county with her parents who settled on a farm about three miles north east of Carroll. Her marriage to Mr Mohler took place Jan 1, 1878 in the Methodist parsonage here, with the Rev J.C. Eckles officiating. After living on a Grant township farm for 12 years, Mr and Mrs Mohler moved to the present home on north Clark street. They observed their 67th wedding anniversary last Jan 1. Mr Mohler passed away Feb 18.
Mr and Mrs Mohler were the parents of seven children, four of whom survive: Mrs. H.C. Ross (Cora), Des Moines, who was here when her mother passed away; Grace B, Walter L, and Wilma B at home. The other three children were: John Louis, who died of diptheria at the age of two on Oct 28, 1880; Emma Jane, a registered nurse, who died March 18, 1917; and Fred W, a World War veteran, who passed away Oct 6, 1928.
Mrs Mohler was a member of a family of 12 children two of whom survive: a brother W.F. Kasdorf and a sister, Mrs Henry Apel of Worthington, MN. She also leaves one step-sister, Mrs F.C. Jatho of Holstein; three grandchildren, Cpl John W Ross, who is in England; Mrs H.C. Kuecks and Mrs Edward Powers of Butte, Montana; and four great grandchildren.
Mrs Mohler, who was a long time member of the Methodist church, was active in a various departments. She belonged to the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was a charter member of the Thimble Bee and also a member of the Daily Times Herald Three Quarter Century club.
