Feb 9, 1909 - Carroll Sentinel - G.M. Dowd died at his home in this city Saturday after a prolonged and painful sickness extending over several years. For the past few months he has been confined to his room. During all his afflictions he bore his burden with patience waiting to hear the final summons. When it came he passed away peacefully as if taking a quiet sleep. The trials through which he passed never weakened his faith in Him who doeth all things well. Though it was well known that the deceased was in a critical condition, the news that he was gone, filled the hearts of those who knew him with sadness. Mr. Dowd was a kind loving Christian and had the highest confidence in his fellow men.

G.M. Dowd was born January 12, 1835, at Huran, Wayne county, N.Y. and died February 5, 1909 at his home in this city. In 1837 he located in Ohio where he grew to manhood. In 1857, in company with his brother, came to Iowa and settled at Toledo and became a student at Grinnell college. After completing his course in that institution he moved to Des Moines where he was elected principal of the east side public schools. He remained in the city schools of Des Moines in the capacity of teacher for about twelve years.

In November 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Thompson. To this union there were born Bertha M. of Chicago; Clyde W. of Lewiston, Mont; Mrs. Margaret Shearer and Grace of this city. Early in youth the deceased united with the Baptist church and has been a faithful and consistent member all his life. He moved with his family to this city in 1880. He then united with the church of his faith and became one of the strongest supporters during its infancy and has done his part faithfully for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church yesterday afternoon and the sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. Newcomer of the Church of God. Beside the relatives of the family living in the city, there were present at the funeral, Mrs. D.B. Edwards, a niece of the deceased, of Des Moines; two nephews of Toledo, Chas. and Elmer Dowd; and a sister of Mrs. Dowd, Mrs. M.E Shearer of Prairie City.

The family have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow for they have lost a kind and loving husband and a good father who bore a name to which they can always look with confidence and pride. G.M. Dowd was one of God's noble men endowed with true Christian spirit who did his work well and left an honored name to his posterity. Few men do more.
