March 20, 1896 - Carroll Sentinel - Died in this city yesterday at 6:30 a.m. Mrs. Frances Buel Paine, wife of Geo. W. Paine. She was a native of Salisbury, Litchfield county, Con, and was a daughter of Eliphalet Buel. Her early life was spent in Salisbury, where she was a member of the Congregational church of that town.

She was married to Geo. W. Paine at Salisbury, by the Rev. Adam Reid, April 18, 1849. After her marriage she resided in Dutchess county, N.Y., where her only child, T.G. Paine, was born. Afterwards she removed to the city of New York, in the spring of 1860, and resided in New York and Brooklyn continuously until 1872, the most of the time being spent in the city of Brooklyn where she was a member of the church of Rev. Theo. L. Onyler and subsequently of Plymouth church, in the best days of Henry Ward Beecher.

In 1872 she came with her husband to Carroll, and has resided continuously since that time in the house where she died. She was one of the original members of the Congregational church which was organized in Carroll about 1873. She was also for about five years a member of the First Reformed Dutch church of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

In the death of Mrs. Paine her husband loses a devoted and loving wife, her son and his family a kind and affectionate mother and many of our people a sincere and faithful friend. The loss is not only that of her immediate family and friends, but of the entire community. She was one of God's gentlewomen and wherever she went she carried with her that indescribable air of gentleness and consideration for others that won for her the affection and esteem of all who met her. In spite of her advanced years her heart was always young and her sympathy and affection was aroused for the young people who gathered about her.

She was one of those who never grew old except physically and although she had suffered much during the past few years her gentle patience was scarcely ruffled and in spite of the terrible pain at times since she was stricken with paralysis ten days before her death, the wearing and wasting away was merely physical and she kept her mental strength and sweetness to the last. All who ever had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Paine, even casually, can realize the sorrow of the bereaved family and do heartily sympathize with them in their affliction. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the house, Rev. A.F. Ernst conducting the services.
