PIONEER RESIDENT OF COUNTY PASSES
Mrs. Chris Wenck Died Suddenly Last Friday at Advanced Age of Eighty Years.
Another pioneer resident of Carroll county passed to her reward last
Friday evening when Mrs. Chris Wenck died suddenly at her home on
North Clark street. Although past 80 years of age, Mrs. Wenck had been
able to maintain her usual household duties until Thursday, when she
complained that she did not feel as well as usual. Friday morning she
became seriously ill and medical aid was summoned, but owing to her
advanced age nothing could be done and she passed away that evening.
Mrs. Wenck had been a resident of Carroll county since 1876 and of the
city since 1899. She was born Mary Rabe, at Meckelburg, Schwerein,
Germany, November, 7, 1837. She came to America in 1866, locating
first at Joliet, Illinois, where she was married to Chris Wenck in the
year following. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Wenck purchased a farm in
Sheridan township and resided ther until their removal to this city.
The deceased was a woman of rip experience and splendid christian
character. As the mother of six children she took keen delight in the
rearing of her family and notwithstanding the many cares of the home
she was intensely interested in the work of the church which was very
dear to her heart. For almost forty-three years she had been a loyal
and faithful member of the Methodist church. She was a true type of
the industrious womanhood that has greatly helped to make this
community what it is today.
Besides her husband and one brother, she leaves to mourn her loss,
three sons and three daughters: Henry, Fred and John, and Mrs. Emma
Onken, Mrs. Mary Wasmund, of Worthington, Minnesota, and Mrs. Ann
Heuton, of Carroll. She is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren
and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the
Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. J.P. Lester officiating in
the absence of Rev. Sheppard, who is on his vacation.
THE CARROLL TIMES, Carroll, Iowa, Thursday, Auguast 22, 1918.
