May 10, 1906 - Carroll Times - Sunday morning there came rest to the weary soul and worn body of another pioneer. Welcoming the last call, Mrs. R.J. Patty surrendered to her Creator the spirit that shall live forever while gathered about her mortal form there remained those whom she had loved with undying affection. Death ended illness and suffering extending over many months, age and disease baffling all that skill and love combined could do to prolong life.

Rachel Jane Greenlee was born Nov. 4, 1841 in Miami county Ohio. She came to Iowa with her parents at the age of four, having thus been a resident of Iowa for over 60 years, record few old settlers can equal. They resided in Iowa county Iowa when she became the wife of Dr. Joseph M. Patty who is well remembered by citizens of this town as one of the first physicians. He died July 31, 1884.

Excepting in 1870-71, when they lived in Kansas, departed was a resident of this city from 1867 almost 39 years. She was the mother of four children of whom a son, Frank Patty preceded her in death.

The following surviving: Clay C. Patty, Fonda, Iowa; Josephine, wife of E.M. Shepherd; and Dr. L.G. Patty, both of this city.

The funeral services at 10 o'clock Tuesday forenoon, were conducted by Rev. W.H. Jordan of the Presbyerian Church of which departed had been a devoted member. Rev. H.H. Barton of the M.E. Church assisted in the services which were conducted at the late residence. The attendance was exceptionally large and was a good indication of the place held by Mother Patty and her family in the estimation of the people of Carroll.

It was like losing a dear member of a family that those who had known her so long regarded the passing hence of her who as wife, mother, neighbor, and citizen had retained an unsullied memory in the minds of all who were familiar with her Christian life.

Of relatives there were present a brother, Wm. R. Greenlee of Belle Plaine; a sister, Mrs. John Stewart of the same place; and another sister, Mrs. J.W. Ruckers of Colorado Springs, Colo., also a nephew, Theodore Patty of Exira, Ia. We join in the general condolence to the bereaved ones.
