March 15, 1897 - Carroll Sentinel - The funeral services for the remains of Geo. Washington, colored, were held Sunday at the M.E. church Rev. W.B. Thompson officiating. The deceased died at the hospital at Clarinda last Thursday. Several months ago he was sent there for treatment. He had been failing in health for some time and his mental weakness was brought on by physical condition. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this city and was a quiet, hard working citizen.
He was born a slave in Girard county, Kentucky, April 5, 1834, and remained so until freed by President Lincolns proclamation. He enlisted in company F, 116th United States colored volunteers, and filled the office of sergeant until the close of the war and was mustered out Jun. 20, 1867.
The deceased leaves a wife and three grown children to mourn his loss.
The funeral services were conducted by the Grand Army post of this city. The remains were taken from the residence to the M.E. church, where appropriate exercises were observed. After an opportunity had been extended to the public to view the remains, they were escorted to the cemetery by the full post. On arriving at the grave, the regular Grand Army ritual was carried out.
The large attendance was a tribute to the memory of the deceased. The church where the funeral sermon was delivered was not near large enough to accomodate those who came to pay their last respects to the memory of the character they had known so long and well.
