Luella Margaret Long, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.G. Long, was born June 21, 1873 at Grove Port, O., and when 12 years of age the family located at Logan in Harrison county, where she was educated and graduated from the city schools. She attended the Woodbine normal school and then went to Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls where she took the primary course and was graduated from that institution.

She taught in the primary department of the Carroll schools for five years and was married Aug. 17, 1898 at Cedar Falls to Louis L. Shoemaker. They came immediately to Carroll, which has been her home ever since. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker, Miss Helen Shoemaker, who is a teacher in Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Walter N. Handy (Florence) of Des Moines; Louis Shoemaker and Gertrude at home.

Besides her husband and children she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Margaret M. Long of Riverside, Illinois; a sister, Mrs. C.E. Steele of Waynesboro, Pa.; and three brothers, Charles Long and D. Dwight Long of Chicago, and H. Carl Long of Riverside, Illinois. She also leaves one grandson, small Richard Handy of Des Moines.

Mrs. Shoemaker united with the Methodist church in early life and since coming to Carroll has been active in the various organizations of the church, especially the Missionary societies and Industrial society. For 30 years she had charge of the primary department in the Sunday school, and for many years was a member of the choir. She was also a member of Chapter E.B.P.E.O.

Her death was a distinct shock to her family and also the community, few people knowing that she was ill. In poor health all winter, she managed to keep about the house and all her duties and church work. She had been ill for about two weeks and last Thursday was taken to St Anthonys hospital, where she gradually failed and died yesterday afternoon shortly before 2 o'clock. Leukemia was the cause of her death. She was conscious until the last and admonished her husband and children to carry on as she would have them do.

Her mother and brothers arrived today and two sisters of L.L. Shoemaker, Mrs Martha Hornecker and and Mrs Charles Seyller, both of Geneseo, Illinois.

Her daughter, Mrs Walter Handy, is ill in her home in Des Moines but Mr Handy and Mr Morgan arrived today from Des Moines and Mrs Lucy Henry is here from Coon Rapids. Mr & Mrs EW Zinser will arrive tomorrow from Storm Lake.
