July 3, 1939 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. Chris Smith, who had lived In Carroll County for more than half a century, died at her home on North East Street at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Smith had been in falling health for the last two months, during which time she suffered several paralytic strokes. She was again stricken last week.

At her bedside when she passed away were her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hubbard of Carroll, and her son, George J. Smith, of Dix, Neb. The body is at the Huffman Funeral Home, where services will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. R.J. MacDanel, minister of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be beside her husband in East Liberty Cemetery. The services are being held Thursday to enable a daughter living in California to arrive here in time. All the children will be present at the rites.

Mrs. Smith, who was seventy eight years old, was a native of Scotland. She was born Jessie Milligan, daughter of Captain William and Margaret Milligan, at Kirkcudbright, Scotland, Jan. 30, 1861. She was eight years old when she came from her native land to Ogle County, Illinois, in 1869. June 18, 1877, she married Christopher Robert Smith at White Rock, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived in Illinois for five years before coming to Carroll County. Arriving here Sept. 27, 1882, Mrs. Smith has lived here since that time.

After farming for a number of years in Sheridan township, Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to their farm about two and one-half miles west of Carroll, which they operated for many years. Retiring in January 1915, they moved to Carroll, where Mrs. Smith has since resided in her home on North East Street. Mr. Smith died Dec. 5, 1938.

Mrs. Smith leaves one son, George J. Smith of Dix, Neb.; six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Hubbard, Carroll; Mrs. Mary Mulcare, Modesto, Calif.; Mrs. Ellen Enger, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Claude G. Lindsey (Elizabeth), Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. C.H. White (Ida Mae), Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. William Haversack (Faye Annabelle), Minneapolis, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; two brothers, John Milligan, Rochelle, Illinois, and James Milligan, Santa Ana, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rice, Kings, Illinois, and Mrs. Robert Gibson (Anna), Chanoe, Illiniois.
