March 13, 1950 - Carroll Daily Times - Death came to Mrs. J. Brown McCrary, 78, widow of a Carroll attorney, at 2:50 a.m. Sunday at St. Anthony hospital. Mrs. McCrary, who died of cirrhosis of the liver, had been ill 13 months. Funeral services are set for Wednesday afternoon. A prayer service at the Huffman Funeral home will be followed by rites at 1:30 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church. The Rev. Waldemar E. Hinck will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll city cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Earnest Jacobs, Glidden; Arnold Platt, Andrew Wenck and Ervin Harmening, Lidderdale; Wilbur Wenck, Lake City; and Theodore Harmening, Carroll.

Mrs. McCrary was born Anna Henrietta Jacobs July 16, 1871 at Sterling, Illinois, a daughter of Wilke and Maria Jacobs. Her father died at Sterling, Illinois, and her mother in Sheridan township, Carroll county, where the family settled in 1872. Mrs. McCrary was married twice. Her first husband, John P. Thede, whom she married February 24, 1892, died February 3, 1907.

They were the parents of four children: Will Thede, Lake City; Albert Thede, Kennewick, Wash.; Mrs. J.J. Pollard (Marie), Bell Gardens, Calif., and Mrs. G.A. Bachman (Ella), Pequot Lakes. Minn. On December 1, 1908, she married J. Brown McCrary at the Sheridan Township Lutheran church. Mr. and Mrs. McCrary made their home in Carroll, where Mr. McCrary was practicing law at the time of his death December 27, 1931. Mrs. McCrary had lived in her present home here 40 years.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McCrary: Lieutenant Colonel T.A. McCrary, Arlington, Va., and A.J. McCrary, Fairfax, Va. (twins); Mrs. E.B. Downey (Marguerite), Des Moines, and Mrs. Frank Grizzle (Ruth), Terre Haute, Ind.

Surviving with the eight children named are 22 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Wilke Jacobs, Glidden; and four sisters: Mrs. George Harmening, Lidderdale; Mrs. John Wenck, Lake City; and Mrs. C.E. Platt and Mrs. C.J. Subbert, Carroll. Mrs. McCrary was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church and the Ladies Aid of the church.
