April 8, 1915 - Carroll Times - Sarah (Abuhl) Lyons was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, February 12, 1856, and died at the hospital in Carroll, Iowa, Saturday, April 3, 1915, after a short illness at the age of 56 years. Her early life was spent in her native State, where she obtained her education and grew to young womanhood, in 1876 she moved with her family to Solon, Iowa, and in 1881 they came to Carroll. On July 2nd, 1885, she was united in marriage to J.W. Lyons of Carroll, Iowa. To this union eight children were born, six of whom live to mourn her loss, William, LuVern, Harry, Sherman, Arthur and Charles.

Since the death of her husband March 7, 1907, she has had the care of the family with the help of her children, and right well has she performed her duty. She was a woman of splendid qualities, sweet and lovable in disposition, which made her an ideal wife and mother. Her life has been devoted to her home and to this task she has certainly been faithful.

She gave the best she had to the bringing up of her children, and her kindness and care will be held by them as a sacred memory. The best thought we could express of her is that she was a good mother, and her children will rise up and call her blessed. She was a good neighbor and greatly beloved by all who knew her. At an early age she entered the Christian life, and at the age of twelve was confirmed in the Reformed Lutheran church, and for some years was an earnest worker in the church and Sunday School of that denomination. Her life has been an inspiration to her family. Her last sickness was short, and she quickly passed away, to be forever with her Lord to whom she was faithful unto death.

She leaves besides her children two brothers, William Abuhl, of Huron, South Dakota, and John Abuhl, of San Francisco, California; three sisters, Mrs. M.A. Baird, of Brunswick, Nebraska; Mrs. W.I. Toop and Mrs. Bertha Behrend, both of Auburn, Iowa.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. the pastor S. Grant Lewis officiating. The services were largely attended and many beautiful flowers spoke of the esteem of her family and friends.

Those from a distance in attendance on the funeral were: Dr. and Mrs. H.L. Fobes, Mrs. G.M. Parker, Miss Laura Spater and Mrs. Florence Behrend, of Auburn, Iowa. Mr. Manuel Marker and Mrs. Henry Marker, of Jefferson, Iowa. Wm. Abuhl, Lead, S.D., Mrs. J.G. Poston, Minneapolis, Minn., Miss Sarah Huber, Solon, Iowa, Miss Elva Toop, Iowa City, Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Toop and daughters, Merle, Mildred and Magdalene, Mrs. Bertha Behrend, Auburn, Mrs. J.F. Yeagor, Helen Lyons, Council Bluffs. The pallbearers were L.L. Shoemaker, Ed Thurllmann, Willis Baird, E.M.
