Aug 20, 1902 - Carroll Sentinel - Another Carroll citizen has passed from earth to life eternal. Monday morning the news spread over the city of the death of J.A. Hale, which occurred at 1:30 that morning. The news was not a surprise, however, for it was known to many that Mr. Hale had been in poor health for years.

In fact his illness dates back to 1895, when he was afflicted with blood poisoning. From this time on he was troubled with paralysis of the spine, and at times was forced to go to bed. Each time he gained strength and was around as usual, until of late years when he has remained at home most of the time.

Three weeks ago he was compelled to go to his room, where he remained until his death. Creeping paralysis and pneumonia of the lungs were the direct causes of his death. Life at best could not be prolonged any length of time and pneumonia only hastened the end. During most of the time he was confined to his bed he was unconscious.

Two brothers, R.C. Hale of Platteville, Wisconsin, and Lafe Hale of Lebannon, Kansas, had just returned to their homes last week and were unable to return to the funeral.

Jacob Alexander Hale was born in Grant county, Wisconsin, in the year 1863, where his boyhood days were spent. Seventeen years ago he was married to Miss Alice M. Martel at Plattville, Wisconsin. After five years of residence there they moved to this city where they have since resided.

Virgil, their only son, is about twelve years old. Besides his wife, there are four brothers and three sisters living; viz: Lafe Hale, Lebannon, Kansas; Alvin and R.C. Hale, Platteville, Wisconsin; Mrs. Theo. Calloway, Lebannon, Kansas; Mrs. Graham, Brainard, Minnesota; and Mrs. John Galloway, Plattville, Wisconsin.

Fifteen years ago Mr. Hale united with the M.E. church at Plattville and has since been a firm believer in that faith. The funeral was held at the M.E. church yesterday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Stratton delivering the sermon. A large concourse of friends were present and followed the remains to their last resting place. Interment was made in the Carroll cemetery. The widow is bowed in grief at the loss of her husband and the entire community extends to her our heartfelt sympathy in the hours of bereavement.
