Feb 23, 1931 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. S.C. Quint, one of the oldest pioneers of Carroll county, died yesterday morning at 1:45 in her home at 708 north Main street after an illness of about two months. She was 87 years of age. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church and they will be conducted by the Rev. W.M. Brooks. Burial will be in the Quint lot in the city cemetery by the side of her husband, who died April 17, 1935.

Mary Ann, daughter of Abram and Abigal Broceus, was born Sept. 13, 1843, in Berrien county near Buchanan, Mich., and grew to womanhood in that vicinity. She was united in marriage to Solomon, C. Quint, April 12, 1866. He was born in Maine and was a veteran of the Civil war serving with company K, twelfth infantry of Michigan until almost the end of the war.

Seven children were born to this union: Mrs. E.M. Byerly (Laura) of north Main street, Carroll; Henry B. Quint of Eagle Grove; Mrs. W.H. Clark (Ora) of Los Angeles, Calif.; A.A. Quint (Del) on Isla Turiguano, Cuba; M.E. Quint (Dick) of McBride, Mich.; Mrs. Clyde L Furnald (Golda) of St. Charles, Illinois. Fred Quint died as the result of an accident, which occurred near his home in Manhattan, Mont., Sept. 4, 1929. She also leaves seven grand children and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Quint was one of a family of 10 children and three sisters still survive: Mrs. Helen Fowler, Mrs. A. Wray, and Mrs. George Hanley, all of whom are still living in their native county of Berrien near Buchanan, Mich. She was the only member of her family who came west.

A year after their marriage, in 1867, Mrs. Quint came with her husband to Iowa, which state has since been the home. They crossed the prairies in a covered wagon and their first home was in Lake City where they lived two and one half years. In 1870 they moved to Pleasant Valley, Carroll county and eleven years later to the farm near Swan Lake southeast of Carroll where they continued to live until 42 years ago when they moved to Carroll locating on north Adams street, where the W.C. Carlson family now live. They then moved to a home on north Court street and 27 years ago built a new home across the street where they lived until 1912 when they removed to the present home on Main street.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1916 but owing to the ill health of Mr. Quint, did not hold a formal reception. Many friends and neighbors called on them during the day in rememberance of the occasion.

Mrs. Quint has been a member of the Methodist church for 64 years. She was the oldest member of the church, and of the industrial society, in which she was an active worker. She was a faithful church member, always found in her pew at all services each Sunday and one of her deepest regrets was the fact that she had to give up attending the services. She was much interested and also the oldest member in the Three Quarter Century club of the Dally Herald. She had always been blessed with excellent health and was only bedfast once during her life time and that was a few years ago, when she had the influenza.

Her last illness dates from Christmas day and since that time was unable to leave her bed. Her youngest daughter, Mrs. Furnald, came immediately from, St. Charles, Illinois, and with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Byerly tenderly cared for their mother, sustaining and cheering her until the end. Until the death of Mr. Quint there had not been a break in the family circle.

Henry E. Quint and wife of Eagle Grove and Clyde Furnald of St. Charles, Illinois, will join his wife here and attend the funeral. The other children are so far distant they will be unable to be present. Most of them visited with Mrs. Quint last summer and her daughter, Mrs Clark from California, spent several weeks with her mother.

Mrs. Quint for the last five summers has been with her daughter, Mrs. Furnald and always returned in the fall to her own home where she spent the remainder of the year with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Byerly. Mrs. Quint and her husband were among the successful pioneers of Carroll county. She had many friends in the county as well as in Carroll and will be missed by the older residents.
