May 16, 1928 - Carroll Times - Funeral services for Mrs. George Stokes were held at the residence, 927 North Crawford street, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Arthur M. Eastman officiating. Interment was made in the Carroll cemetery. The pallbearers were Will Pierce, Ed Rogers, Will Clements, Alfred Jones, J.B. Pascoe, and Truman Ralph.

In the death of Mrs. Stokes one of the highly respected citizens of Carroll has gone to her reward. During her entire illness she was uncomplaining and patient and found much comfort in the teachings of the Bible.

Sarah Janet Belt was born at Monticello, Ind., October 4, 1841. When three years of age she was taken by her parents to Granvillo, 0hio, where she was educated in the Granville schools and grew to young womanhood. Following the completion of her school studies she followed the profession of teaching of many years. In 1869 she was united in marriage at Morrison, Illinois, to George Stokes, a young veteran of the Civi war.

They came to Carroll county in 1877, locating on a farm two and a half miles north of Halbur. For the last 30 years they have lived in their home on North Crawford street. Mrs. Stokes was one of the charter members of the Beuluh Methodist church. As long as her strength would permit she was an active member in every department of the church in this city, taking a special interest in the Sunday school, the W.P.M.S. and the W.C.T.U. She was of a very gentle and kindly nature and lived a worthy, useful life.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. T.N. Scott of Ft. Dodge, and Pearl, who has devoted her entire time to the care of both her father and mother. She is also survived by three grandchildren and four great grandchildren, two children died in infancy.
