Sept 16, 1943 - Carroll Times - James Kelly, retired railway employe, passed away at the St. Anthony Hospital at 1:35 yesterday afternoon, his death following a four-months illness. During that period he had been in the hospital at intervals having been cared for the remainder of the time at his home, 127 North Maple Street, where he lived with his sister, Miss Mary Kelly. His age was sixty years.

Funeral services are to be at 9 o'clock Saturday morning at St. Joseph's Church, of which Mr. Kelly was a member. Rt. Rev. Monsingor V.T. Lynch will officiate at the requiem mass. Burial will be in the family lot in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Kelly was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Kelly, natives of Ireland, who were well known pioneer residents here. He was born Aug. 5, 1883 at Glidden, Iowa. In 1887 the family moved to Carroll, where he attended the local schools.

He then took up railroading, at which he was employed for 42 years. After working for the Chicago & North Western Railway company, he went to Sioux City, where his employ covered a span of 30 years. He was engine foreman in the passenger yards of the Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul & Omaha Railroad until his retirement about a year ago.

In March of this year, Mr. Kelly and his sister, Miss Mary F Kelly, who had made her home with him in Sioux City since her retirement as principal of the south side public grade school here, returned to the family home in Carroll.

Besides his sister, Mr. Kelly leaves one brother, Thomas J. Kelly of Denver, CO.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Miles and one sister, Anna.

Mr. Kelly belonged to the Elks Lodge of Sioux City and the Brotherhood of Railroad men.
