September 14, 1964 - Carroll Daily Times - Funeral services for Ira Stetzel, 79, former Carroll businessman who died Sept. 8 at his home in Paris, Ark., were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Methodist Church at Carroll. The Rev. Dr. Paul M. Dietterich officiated. Mrs. Donald Severin was organist and also accompanied Mrs. Stephen L. Huffman as she sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Burial was in the Carroll City Cemetery, with nephews as pallbearers. Arrangements were in charge of the Huffman Funeral Home.

Mr. Stetzel was born at North Liberty, near Iowa City, where his parents were pioneers, his father having come to the United States from Alsace-Lorrain about 1850. When he was a year old, the family migrated to western Iowa, settling near Audubon. His marriage to Mildred K. Neff took place Aug. 15, 1917.

Mr. and Mrs. Stetzel were pioneers in the chicken hatchery business in Iowa. It is believed that their hatchey on the farm north of Audubon was the second in the state of Iowa, established in February, 1923. Three years later their hatchery burned and they left the farm, moving to Carroll. Here they operated a hatchery from 1926 through 1947. In 1952, they moved to Arkansas and established a hatchery and poultry farm. Theirs was the first franchised hatchery in Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife; five children, Mrs. John H. (Doris) Campbell of Costa Rica; Warren Stetzel, Barnesville, Ohio; David Stetzel, North Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. Theodore (Janice) Harkey, Paris; and Mrs. John R. (Norma Ruth) Shore, Winston Salem, N.C.; ten grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Rose Moreland, Audubon; and one brother, Lewis Stetzel, Spirit Lake.

One son, George Ira Stetzel was killed in an accident in 1946. Also preceding him in death were 13 brothers and sisters.
