July 17, 1944 - Carroll Times - Mrs. Sophia Pluckhahn, 83, died at her home at 426 East Sixth street, at 5:45 Sunday morning. She had been in poor health for the past four years, and critically ill for about a week. Mrs. Pluckhahn had been bedfast since last Monday. Funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at the family home at 2 o'clock are to be followed by services at St. Paul's Lutheran church, with the Rev. A. Bleeke officiating. Burial will be beside her husband in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery. The body was returned this morning from the Huffman funeral home to the family residence, to rest there until the time of the rites.

Mrs. Pluckhahn was well known in this community, where she resided for 60 years. She was born Sophia Koepke May 21, 1861, in Macklenberg, Schwerin, Germany. She was one of a family of three children who were orphaned when she was a small girl. Coming to America in 1879, she married Christian Pluckhahn April 3 of that year at Lyons, N.Y. In April 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Pluckhahn came to Carroll from Lyons. From 1889 to 1907 they lived on their Grant township farm. In March 1907, they retired to make their home in Carroll and Mrs. Pluckhahn had lived here since that time. Her husband died Feb. 20, 1910.

Mrs. Pluckhahn was the mother of four children, three of whom survive: Fred Pluckhahn, Mrs. A.H. Sporleder (Anna) and Mrs. A.C. Reinowski (Elizabeth), all of Carroll; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A son, Charles, died July 9, 1937. Her brother and sister remained in Germany and preceded her in death.

Mrs. Pluckhahn was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. She was a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and also of the Ladies Aid society. She had taken an active part in church work until her health failed.
