June 4, 1963 - Carroll Daily Times - Carroll County Sheriff Leonard F. Hinze, 55, died about 9:30 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, where he had been taken by ambulance a week ago from St. Anthony Hospital. He had undergone major surgery in Omaha March 28. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Huffman Funeral Home in Carroll.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Gunkel, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Herbert Hinze, Arcadia; and three sisters, Mrs. Laura Popp, LaMesa, Calif.; Mrs. Victor (Hazel) Culver, Seattle, Wash.; and Mrs. Lilly Eckholdt, Manning.

Mr. Hinze was born Oct. 13, 1907, in Carroll County, a son of Charles F. and Christina Hoist Hinze. He graduated from Carroll High School and the University of Illinois. He taught school and coached for two years in Illinois. From 1937 through 1939, Mr. Hinze was a state driver's license examiner. He joined the Carroll police department in 1939 and returned to the force following 2 & 1/2 years in service in World War II. He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Air Force and was a crime investigator for the air provost marshal.

Mr. Hinze was a justice of the peace in Carroll from 1951 through 1953, when he accepted the post of deputy sheriff under Sheriff Al Thorup. Following Sheriff Thorup's resignation, Mr. Hinze was appointed by the board of supervisors to fill the vacancy which existed from Jan. 1, 1962 until the November 1962 general election, at which time he was elected county sheriff.

He was a member and active in the Democratic party. In September 1962, he was elected president of the West Central Iowa Peace Officers Association, which he had previously served as secretary. Mr. Hinze was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Carroll. In January 1963, he was installed as worshipful master of Signet Lodge No. 264, A.F. and A.M. He also held membership in Za-Ga-Zig Temple of the Shrine, Des Moines. He was also a member of Maurice Dunn Post No. 7, American Legion: and B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1637, Carroll.
