Henry Hanssen Died Christmas Morning

Popular Young Carroll Man Crosses the Silent River After a Brief Illness.

Word was received in the city Christmas morning that Henry M. Hanssen had passed away at Clarinda at five o'clock that morning. His brother, Dan, and M. Allen Hoyt left for that place immediately and returned with the body last evening.

Henry Hanssen was one of Carroll's brightest young men and that such an untimely end should come to a life so full of promise is beyond understanding. Until a few weeks ago he was in his usual health and in happy spirits. A few days before he was taken sick his most intimate friends noticed a change in him, which they thought of later when the tired nerves gave way. No cause has been found for his illness but it is thought that it came as a result of an injury to his head and neck when his car turned turtle two years ago. He was severely bruised and hurt at that time although no bones were broken.

He was born in Sheridan township, January 24, 1883, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Hanssen. His father died in 1887 from pneumonia and after running the farm for almost six years Mrs. Hanssen and her two small boys moved to Carroll in 1893. After graduating from the Carroll high school in 1902, Henry attended school at Ames, being graduated in the engineering department in 1906. Upon finishing school he was city engineer for several years and was later county engineer, but refused the office two years ago. Since that time he has been county engineer of Marion county.

He performed his duties faithfully and well and the county has much of his work to feel proud of.

The funeral will be held from the home of his brother, Dan, Friday afternoon at two o'clock. The services will be in charge of the Masons and Rev. Lester.

He is survived by his mother and brothers.
