Johann Gerhard Janning
On Monday evening, the 14th of March, Johann Gerhard Janning died at his home in Halbur, Iowa after having received the Last Rights of the Roman Catholic Church.
The deceased was born on February 2, 1831 at Braunsch, District of Lingen, Hanover Province, Germany. As a young man he immigrated to America, and in 1868 he married Barbara Roth in Wisconsin. This marriage produced ten children, namely: Maria, Mrs. P.W. Schenkelberg of Halbur, Iowa; Johhann in Maple River Township and Georg in Kniest Township; Franz, residing in Anthon, Oklahoma; Bernard and Heinrich, Mt. Carmel; Barbara, Mrs. P.H. Wittrock living in Butte, Nebraska; Katharina, Mrs. Anton Gretemann, Anthon, Oklahoma; and Misses Elisabeth and Anna, who are still residing in the parental home.
The deceased was one of the first settlers of Kniest Township, where he owned his well-equipped farm. He then lived a number of years with his family in Oklahoma. About two years ago he moved to Halbur, where he went into well-deserved retirement. The funeral services took place on Friday at nine o’clock from St. Augustine Church in Halbur, and his earthly remeins were laid to their final rest at the local Catholic cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his wife and the above-named children. We wish to hope that the deceased, since he has passed away from this world, has gone on to eternal joy and blessednss. May he rest in peace.
