Long and Useful Life Terminated By Death July 11

Mrs. Catherine Maze Passes Away at Home of Daughter in Illinois

Mrs. Catherine Maze died Wednesday afternoon, July 11, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. L. Macomber, of Winnetka, Ill. She had not been well since July 1, when she suffered a sinking spell at Peru, Ill., where she was visiting at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Maze. Mrs. Maze left Carroll, Ia., April 1, after spending the winter months in this city, going from here to the Macomber home. After spending several weeks at Winnetka, she went to Peru. Following her sudden illness at Peru, she was brought to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Macomber. Since her illness, July 1, her mind had not been clear and she was continually perplexed as to her whereabouts. She continually expressed a desire to return to Carroll.

Funeral services were held Friday morning, July 13, at 11 o'clock at Wheaton, Ill., and burial was made in the Wheaton cemetery beside her husband, who died December 30, 1900.

Mrs. Maze, as Catherine R. Gibson, was born in Philadelphia, Penn., November 28, 1836. She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. William Gibson and came from a family of six children, three boys and three girls. A twin sister of the deceased died at the age of 13 days. Mrs. Maze outlived her brothers and sisters.

The early girlhood days of Mrs. Maze were spent in Pennsylvania. In 1869 she came west with a brother, who was in poor health and was locating in Minneapolis, Minn., Minnesota having the reputation in that early day of possessing a climate which would cure all ills. That year she taught in the Minneapolis schools and the following year on July 5, 1870 was united in marriage to Geo. Maze. Mr. Maze was at the time engaged in the milling business in Minneapolis. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Maze moved to Dubuque, Ia., and very soon afterwards settled in Wheaton, Ill. It was here two children were born, a boy and a girl, who died in infancy. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Maze moved to Carroll county to the farm just north of Carroll, where George P. Maze is now living. They accumulated an entire section of land and became known as influential and prosperous members of the community. March 1, 1900 they moved across the road to what was then the Mike Miller residence, but Mr. Maze's death following a few months later, Mrs. Maze, who had intended to make the home their life residence sold it in 1906 to the late Sebastian Bruch, and since that time has made her home with Mrs. Macomber or in this city.

During her entire life Mrs. Maze was energetic and progressive. She was a splendid type of woman, enjoying literature and the better things of life to the very utmost. For many years Mrs. Maze was a member of the Clio club and was extremely interested in educational work. She had a remarkable mind and was interested and posted on the affairs of the day. Erect in stature she walked with the easy stride of a much younger woman and her hand writing was firm and clear. Mrs. Maze loved Carroll and its people and was always glad to be among her friends in this city, who were equally glad to have her among them. Her life was spent in quiet devotion to the Presbyterian church in which faith she was raised. For many years she was a member of that church in this city.

Surviving are the three children of Mr. Maze by a former marriage; Mrs. F. L. Macomber of Winnetka; John J. Maze of Chicago; and George P. Maze of Carroll. She is also survived by two half brothers living in Pittsburg, Pa.
