Mrs. James Wattles Died at Her Home this Morning After a Brief Illness.

Funeral Sunday.

This morning about 5 o'clock the brittle thread of life, which for several days past had been holding the soul and body of Mrs. Wattles together snapped and the spirit winged its way back to its maker. For about a week the deceased had been failing rapidly and yesterday morning G. W. Wattles, of Omaha, and his brother, Walter, of Neligh, Neb., were summoned to her bedside. They arrived on the evening trains and the family circle was unbroken until death called the loving wife and affectionate mother home. The disease which resulted in death was of long standing and during the past years she had been a patient sufferer from derangement of the liver. The disease did not develop a dangerous form until about a week ago when she was confined to her bed and so rapidly did her strength fail that all hopes of her recovery were abandoned, but so long as life lasted those who surrounded her bedside did all they could to call her back from the great beyond into which she was fast drifting, but to no avail; the master had summoned her and loving hands could not prolong the life which was so dear to them. The funeral will be held at the Episcopal church, of which she was a member, Sunday morning at 11 o'clock.

The deceased was born in Cuyahoga county, N. Y., June 2, 1822. Her maiden name was Betsy A. Whiton and she was married to James Wattles Jan. 15, 1850. In 1866 they moved to Iowa and one year later settled in Carroll, where they have resided ever since. The death of Mrs. Wattles removes one of the pioneers from our county, who knew what it was to live in a new country and raise a family. The early influences of this pious christian mother has left its impress upon the family which survives her which consists of three sons and one daughter. W. T. Wattles, her oldest son is located at Neligh, Neb.; G. W. Wattles, at Omaha; C. L. Wattles in this city, as is also her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Swender. The aged husband, who is one year her senior, is overcome wih grief and unable to leave his bed. He during the past winter has been in poor health and his friends trust to see him recover and live among them for many years. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all and the only desire is to be of service in the sad hour of affliction.
