Herman G. Gehling

Solemn requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. H. Greteman at funeral rites for Herman G. Gehling, 93, at SS. Peter and Paul's Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. Gehling died at 7:15 Sunday evening at his home, 642 West Second Street, after being in failing health five years and seriously ill the last month.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The body is resting at the Sharp Funeral Home, where rosary recitation will be at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Msgr. Greteman will lead the prayers Tuesday evening.

Mr. Gehling, retired farmer, was a former city councilman. He was stockholder in the Carroll County State Bank and former president of the Farmers Grain & Lumber Company.

In his younger days he had taken an active part in community affairs. He had served on the board of directors for fund raising for St. Anthony Hospital and St. Angela Academy when both institutions were founded.

A native Iowan, Mr. Gehling was born Nov. 10, 1861, at Calmar. He was married Jan. 24, 1888, to Ella Timp at St, Mary's Church in Fort Atkinson.

A year after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gehling came to Carroll and located on their farm one and one-half miles, south of the city. They lived on the farm until 1924, when they retired and moved into Mr. Gehling's present home here.

Mrs. Gehling died May 2, 1937. Mr. Gehling's son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Houlihan, and family have made their home with him since 1939.

Mr. Gehling is survived by seven children; 69 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren and one brother, Henry Gehling, Thief River Falls, Minn.

His children are: Henry Gehling, Gilmore City; Theodore Gehling, Carroll; Mrs. Anton (Agnes) Wernimont, Storm Lake; Sr. Mary Bernadita, Cathedral Convent, Superior, Wis.; William Gehling, Carroll; Mrs. Clarence (Catherine) Masching, Carroll; and Mrs. Houlihan (Cecelia), Carroll.

Three granddaughters are in the convent: Sr. Mary Anna Mae, Lacrosse, Wis.; Sr. Mary Eucharia, Eau Claire, Wis., and Sr. Mary Ella, Immaculate Conception Convent, LaCrosse.

Three children preceded Mr. Gehling in death: Mrs. William (Mary) Reiling, Joseph and Herman Gehling. One brother, Barney Gehling, and three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Hackfort, Mrs. Herman (Anna) Hackfort, and Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Brincks, are deceased.

Mr. Gehling was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church and the Holy Name Society of the parish.
