Breda Boy Dead

Mrs. Minnie Bartel residing east of Breda received a message last Friday evening conveying the sad news that her son, John, had died in France October 3rd, from Bronchial pneumonia. This was the first intimation received by the Bartel family that he had been ill and the news came as a great shock to them. John Bartel left Carroll in July with the Camp Gordon contingent and went across with the rest of the Carroll county boys but it is presumed that he died shortly after his arrival in France.

John Bartel was born October 9, 1890, and resided on the farm owned by his parents five miles east and one mile south of Breda all his life up to the time he left for army service. He leaves to mourn his death his mother, Henry and Anna who reside at home, Mrs. Frank Soat at Milford, and Peter who is at Camp Dodge. His father died in 1903. John will be greatly missed in his home as well as by his friends and will be sadly mourned. He gave up his life in defense of his country as many others have done and his reward will be great in eternity. -- Breda News.
(Contributor note: WWI Draft Registration for John Bartel provides his date of birth as 7 October 1889.)
