Obituary James N. Smith

Another of Carroll county's soldier boys was laid to rest in the local cemetery last week. Word came to J. T. Sawyer a week ago last Sunday that his friend James Smith had died of pneumonia at the Marine Hospital at Quantico, Va. The body was shipped to Carroll and laid away last Thursday with full military honors. The casket was covered with a large American flag and was borne to the grave by six members of the Carroll Home Guard Company. Rev. J. P. Lester of the Presbyterian church read the service at the grave and at the close "Taps" was sounded. Private James Nicholas Smith was born at Alexauria, South Dakota, on January 26, 1888. He enlisted in the U. S. Marines at Carroll on December 17, 1917, and died at Quantico, Va., on October 13, 1918. He had been stationed on the U. S. S. South Carolina and had made one trip across the ocean. He leaves to mourn his loss his father, James N. Smith, of Kent, Washington; three brothers, Robert, of Georgetown, Washington; Sergt. John B., of Fort Sill; Thomas F., of the U. S. S. Frederick, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Haiar, of Farmer, South Dakota, and Mrs. A. E. Sawyer, of Carroll.
