Rev. Father John Baeumler Dies at Hospital in Emporia, Kas.

Organized Parish, Built Church and School At Halbur

The Rev. Father John Baeumler of the Sioux City diocese, who organized the parish at Halbur, died yesterday morning at St. Mary's hospital at Emporia, Kas., where he had been chaplain since October. The body arrived here today and was taken by B. A. Gregory to Halbur, where it is lying in state at St. Augustine's church.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Augustine's church where solemn requiem mass will be celebrated. The Most Rev. Edmund Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City diocese, will officiate and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Frederick Huessman of Templeton will give the sermon.

Burial will be in St. Augustine's cemetery at Halbur.

Father Baeumler was born in Bavaria, Aug 21, 1867, and came to the United States in April, 1882.

He began studying for the priesthood at St. Francis seminary in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1888, and was ordained June 20, 1897. After serving several years as assistant priest to the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Feuerstein at LeMars, the Rev. Father Baeumler was commissioned by Bishop Heelan to establish a new parish at Halbur. Upon land that was then cornfields Father Baeumler built the beautiful church of St. Augustine with its parish house and school.

After many years of faithful and zealous service at that place, Father Baeumler was transferred to Willey and served later at the following parishes: Mount Carmel, St. Benedict, Hospers, Bancroft and Roselle, all in the Sioux City diocese.

When his health began to fail he was appointed by Bishop Heelan, chaplain of St. Joseph's at Keokuk, where he remained until transferred last October to St. Mary's hospital at Emporia, Kas.
