Death claimed two of the well known pioneers of Carroll county last week in the passing of Mr and Mrs John Knute of Glidden. Mr. Knute died Wednesday, March 18th, and Mrs. Knute passed away two days later, Friday, March 20th.
The following obituary has been furnished for publication:

JOHN KNUTE was born in Wilma, Poland, September 16th, 1850, and passed away at his home in Glidden, Wednesday, March 18th, 1931, after a brief illness of pneumonia and other complications, at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 2 days.
HENRIETTE JANSSEN KNUTE was born in Oldenburg, Germany, December 17th, 1859, and passed away at her home in Glidden, Friday, March 20th, 1931, after a lingering illness of diabetes and other complications, at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 3 days.

On the 8th day of June, 1879, Mr and Mrs Knute were united in marriage in Oldenburg, Germany the home of the bride.

God blessed this union with nine children; 2 daughters and 7 sons. Five of the nine children God gave them have preceded them in death. One daughter died in infancy; also one son died in infancy. Frank was 15 years of age when he died of diabetes; John and Herman died in France while serving their country as members of the American Army. John died of pneumonia, Herman was killed in action in the battle of the Argonne Forest.

Five years after their marriage Mr and Mrs Knute decided to leave the old home in Oldenburg, Germany and come to American the land of greater opportunity. So in the year 1884 they bid farewell to the old home in the old world and started for America to establish a new home in the new world. The young couple came straight to Carroll County and settled on a farm northwest of Lidderdale; three years later they moved to their present home in the town of Glidden until the call came for them to move once more and occupy their new home, 'a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.'

John Knute was a man of sterling character and an excellent Christian; always deeply interested in the work of the kingdom and served the kingdom's interest to the best of his ability. He was a loving husband and a kind and thoughtful father and a good neighborly neighbor, never finding fault, but always thinking the best of everybody.

Mr. Knute united with the Presbyterian Church March 28th, 1920, and he had loyally supported the church by his prayers, his presence and by his gifts every since. He will be greatly missed by the people who have known him so long; his pastor will never forget his cheery greetings and his warm handclasp.

Mrs Knute united with the Lutheran church in Oldenburg, Germany, her old home, when a young girl 14 years of age. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of her native land. When she came to American she had her membership transferred to the Lutheran church. Eleven years ago she and her husband united with the Presbyterian church.

Mrs Knute was an earnest, consecrated and faithful Christian all her life. Her faith in her Savior was great and her Christian fortitude was most wonderfully manifested during her long illness. During the last two or three months the grace of God was most marvelously revealed to and through her, God alone knows how much she suffered, but she never complained.

Mr and Mrs Knute were gold star parents. As already mentioned, two of their sons paid the supreme sacrifice on the alter of service for their country and their God. One died in battle and the other died of pneumonia contracted in France in the service of his country.

Mrs Knute was a very active member of the Glidden Auxiliary. Mr and Mrs Knute leave to mourn their loss, one daughter, Mrs. L. A. Ford; three sons, Charles and George of Glidden, and Henry of near Lidderdale; 14 grandchildren; one brother, O.K. JANSSEN of Glidden; three sisters, Mrs. John Peters of near Lidderdale, Mrs. Kate Arhens and Mrs. Hannah Dalling of Oldenburg, Germany; also one sister-in-law, Mrs Jake Janssen of near Lidderdale, besides a host of other friends and more distant relatives.
