Henry Kurtz, Sr.
On Friday morning the mortal body of Mr. Henry Kurtz, Sr. was laid to its final resting, after a solemn requiem for the peace of mind of the deceased was celebrated in Saint Peter and Paul's Church. The burial took place at the German Catholic cemetery where the tired one accompanied those who had been laid to sleep from this worlds' pilgrimage themselves with so many mortal bodies.
The one who has fallen asleep was born approximately 5 hours above Cologne on the Rhine near Siegburg on May 6, 1836. In the 60 years he came to Essen where he worked many years at the Little Krupp cast steel factory and where he met and learned to love his faithful, now for him grieving wife, the then being Miss Johanna Janseen, and the one he led to the marriage altar on Feb. 6, 1866. Twelve children were the fruits of this happy and christian marriage, of which six died at a childs' age. In the year 1881 the family joined themselves with a small company of emigrants, who had set their goal to America, and arrived here, the deceased moved with family to Carroll, Iowas, where two brothers-in-law, Mr. William and Mr. Victor Janssen awaited him, and the family has since lived in the third ward. The respect for his special public spirit which he brought towards his fellow citizens, does not belong in small measure. One can freely declare, that with the deceased one of the best citizens of Carroll is gone. And as the community lost a galant fellow citizen, so is the difficult loss now irreparable for the grieving widow and children. The family and his home was for the deceased his kingdom, for which he was always prepared, to bring the most difficult sacrifice. And now the good old Kurtz has closed his eyes forever, indeed his good works remain to stand. At his grave grieves his widow and four sons: Wilhelm and Hermann Kurtz from Des Moines, Henry Kurtz Jr. from Carroll, and Alois Kurtz from Omaha; likewise two daughters, Gerturde, Mrs. Fred Marien and Miss Anna Kurtz, who finds herself with her mother in the parental house.
