Carroll Paper, Aug 1926
Former Resident of Carroll died at Odebolt home. Moved to Carroll County when a boy and resided here until 1909. MANY ATTEND FUNERAL Knights of Columbus from many towns were present to give respects at last rites.
The following account of the life of John Bengford, Sr., was delayed for several reasons, but as deceased was so well and favorably known here, as is Mrs. Bengford, the account is published as it came from Odebolt: Knights of Columbus from various points in western Iowa attended the funeral here on July 30 of John Bengford, Sr., grand knight of Gonzaga Council No. 1876, of Odebolt, who died in St. Anthony's Hospital at Carroll, after a brief sickness of barely a week, appendicitis being the direct cause.
Mr. Bengford, while at work on his farm was suddenly taken sick with acute appendicitis. There being no relief from from his excessive paid, he was taken to the hospital at Carroll, the following day, where he underwent an operation the same evening. However, other complications set in, and it was evident at once that his life was in great danger, and hopes for recovery slight.
John Bengford was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bengford and was born September 25, 1873, in Ossian, IA. Yet as a boy he moved with his parents to Carroll County, where he spent most of his life. Nov. 28, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Theresa Klocke, and to this union were born eleven children, five of whom died in infancy.
In 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Bengford and family moved from Carroll County to Valley Falls, Kan., where they made their home for seven years.
Having bought a farm, part of the former Cook ranch, in 1916, five miles north of Odebolt, the family in spring of that year moved there on till a year and one-half ago, Mr. and Mrs. Bengford moved to Odebolt leaving their sons to take care of the farm.
Mr. Bengford was a man in the true sense of the word. He made friends wherever he went, and many fine traits of character were plainly in evidence by those who knew him well.
Those whose are left in his immediate family are his sorrowing wife and six children, John, Bernard, Joseph, Genevieve (Mrs. Romaine Dinges), Herman and Rose, and a small adopted daughter, Mary.
Besides these he leaves a mother, Mrs. Matt Henrichs of Carroll, also sixteen grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were held at St. Martin's Catholic Church. Re. Fr. A. G. Schaefer officiated.
The pallbearer were six members of the Knights of Columbus, namely Wm. Landgraf, James McLaughlin, Joe Roeder, John Bauer, Peter H. Dinges and Harry Sommers.
Different Knights of Columbus councils representing the Iowa State councils were represented by Leo Wegman of Carroll, representing the Iowa State Council; C.B.Gregory of Carroll, the Charles Carroll council, and Ed Lucey, representing St. Mary's council of Storm Lake.
Members of the Gonzaga council marched in a body. Among them were Knights from Schaller, Wall lake, Lake View, Ida Grove, Mapleton, Danbury and Odebolt.
