I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Words in quotations are original. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

John Schultes

This man was born on 31 December 1846 in Woppenrieth, in the rural parish of Vohenstrauss, Bavaria. He spent the years of his youth there, attended elementary school, and received First Holy Communion. He was then faced with the important question of choosing an occupation. And so, like his father, he chose the occupation of farmer and assisted on his parents’ farm until his 28th year. He then carried out his long-held plan to immigrate to America. Here in America, he made his way first to St. Lucas, Iowa, where he married Miss Walburga Grube, a proper young woman. After remaining there another three months, he moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Carroll County, where he rented and worked a farm for six or seven years. He then purchased 120 acres in the same township, which he operated successfully for nine years and then sold. Mr. Schultes then acquired 160 acres in Newton Township, which he equipped with good buildings—indeed, just this spring he built a fine, spacious residence there. The farm is notable on account of its fine location and good, fertile soil. Mr. Schultes and his wife and children are well-known in the entire county and they enjoy a good reputation. This happy marriage produced nine children named: Anna, Mrs. Frank Tigges; Theresia; Johann; Maria; George; Barbara; Margaretha; Michael; and Susanna.
