I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Words in quotations are original. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Michael Bauer

This man, who operates a successful beer tavern in the little town of Willey, was born on 16 May 1864 in Pleinting, District of Vilshofen, Lower Bavaria. He attended school first in Pleinting, then in Alkhofen, and after he finished school he worked with his father on his parents’ farm until his 15th year. He then immigrated to the United States of North America, and upon arriving here he made his way to Carroll County, Iowa, where he again worked at farming. After two years, his parents also came from Bavaria, and he then worked two years for his parents, and then worked on various other farms until 1885. On 23 October 1885 he married Miss Maria Lampe, a fine young lady who was born on 17 December 1867 in Warren County, Iowa. After the marriage, Mr. Bauer attempted to go into farming for himself, but he had to stop working due to illness. He then operated a beer tavern in Carroll for six years, and then for two years in Coon Rapids, and since 1894 in Willey. He runs a very proper and fine establishment and always keeps the best drinks on tap, as well as fine liquors and wines. This happy marriage has produced four children, named: Anna, George, Frank, and Veronika.
