John Kohnke was born in Vosslock-Barnstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in 1861. His parents were Hans and Elsa (Schlueter) Kohnke. He immigrated to Chicago when he was about 20 years old. In the 1880's he moved to Carroll County where he worked as a farm hand for Mathilda Haseman, whose husband had died in 1889. In 1891 he married Mary Haseman, one of Mathilda's four daughters. (Emma Coleman, Mrs Ed Schroeder, Mrs John D. Wenck). John and Mary bought a farm one mile west of Lidderdale. They had seven children. Elsa, John, Frieda, Henry, Carl, Mathilda and Marie. Mathilda Haseman lived with John and Mary. Mary died in 1929. Until his death in 1935 John lived alone for some time and for three years with his son John W. and his family lived with him. Both Mary and John are buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Lidderdale.
