Henry Knute

Henry Knute was the son of John and Henrietta (Janssen) Knute. They came from Oldenburg, Germany, in 1885. Henry had five brothers: George, Frank, Charles, John and Herman, and one sister, Anna (Ford). John and Herman died in the service in 1917-1918. Henry was born in 1885 in Germany. As a young man he became a butcher, working in a meat market in Belle Plaine, Iowa, and later in Glidden, Ia. In later years he used this talent to the service of his neighbors. Tena (Fleshner) Knute, daughter of Brunhey and Rena (Mai) Fleshner, who came from Germany in the late 1880's, settled on a farm between Glidden and Lidderdale. Tena was born in 1893 on this farm and the rest of the family were all born in Germany. Tena had four sisters: Jessie (Warning), Annie (Buss), Rena (Schmidt) and Tillie (Goes), and two brothers, George and Henry.
Henry and Tena were married at St. John's Lutheran Church on June 13, 1913/ They lived in Glidden until 1920, when they bought a farm from Jake Best. That farm was located two miles east and 1/2 mile north of Lidderdale. In 1947 they bought a house in Lidderdale and moved in the fall. Henry and Tena liked gardening and flowers. Henry passed away on July 2, 1960. Tena continued to live in her home until 1991 when she suffered a stroke and had to move to Carroll manor. She passed away in 1995. Henry and Tena had two children. Fern, born February 3, 1916, who married Fred Berns, and Lester, born June 5, 1920 and who married Lorna Rose.
