An article was submitted to the Calhoun County History 1854-1982 by Ruth Volberding. She says that Grandpa Gustav Zell and his cousin William left their native Jastrow, Prussia in 1868 at age 18, first working in Mahanoy City, Pa., where his sister Bertha and her husband lived. He later worked in Wisconsin and Illinois. His family was in the shoe making business, and were in Jastrow from the 1700s until World War II.
Gustav returned to Jastrow in 1879 and became engaged to Augusta Zaske. They returned to Chicago where they were married.
A son was born in Chicago before they left for Iowa in 1881. August was born shortly after they were settled in their house on the farm. August became a Lutheran Minister and was married to Laura Gutz, daughter of Fred Gutz.
The article contains no other data about August.
Gustav had a brother, Edward who lived south of Manson. They lived with Edward while their house was built. Edward later moved to Missouri.
In another article about a cousin William Zell, it says that Gustav and William came to America in 1873 and that they first worked in coal mines in Pennsylvania. After returning to Jastrow to visit parents in 1878, they returned to Chicago in 1881.
