Dennis Carl Barkhaus Sr.
(May 14, 1935 - February 24, 2019)Dennis Barkhaus, Sr., age 83, of Pomeroy, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa. All services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 27 from 4-7PM and funeral services will be Thursday, February 28 at 10:30AM. Dennis was born on May 14, 1935 in San Diego, CA. He was the son of Grace and Karl Barkhaus. At the age of six, his family moved to Fort Dodge. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1953. On March 2, 1956, Dennis married Norma Slagle in San Clemente, California. In January of 1954, Dennis joined the U.S. Marines. He served in Korea and was discharged in 1957 with the rank of Sergeant. When Dennis returned home from his military service, he and Norma lived in rural Duncombe. In 1976, they settled in Pomeroy. Dennis worked as a mechanic at Wonder Bread, a welder at Bush-Hog/Standhoist Engineering and JetCo, did city maintenance for the City of Pomeroy, and was a fertilizer applicator at Pomeroy Ag. Products. Dennis was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was an active member of the NRA and collected military rifles. He raised Appaloosa horses and spent time fishing and hunting. He also ran a small saddle repair shop, and he especially enjoyed watching old western movies. Survivors include his children, Julie (Ray) Hansen of Fort Dodge, Michael Barkhaus of Fort Dodge, Laurie Point of Pocahontas, Dennis (Terry) Barkhaus of Englewood, CO, James Barkhaus of Pocahontas, Audrey (Tony) Randolph of Rapid City, SD, Marjorie (Eleanor) Ayala of Lake Montezuma, AZ, Amy MacDonald of Phoenix, AZ, and Daniel Barkhaus of Pomeroy; 43 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; sister, Joleen Bockoven of Port Orange, FL and brother, Donald (Phyllis) Barkhaus of Altoona. Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, his parents Grace and Karl, daughter-in-law Aleta Barkhaus, grandsons Rick Thompson and Caleb MacDonald, and his sisters Audrey Jean Barkhaus and Elaine Denker.
