Ernest Schoon
April 27, 1929 - July 22, 2016Ernest “Ernie” Schoon - age 87, of Pocahontas, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Ernest August Schoon was born April 27, 1929, on a farm north of Palmer, Iowa. He was the son of Egbert and Elizabeth (Huschen) Schoon. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul Lutheran’s Church in Palmer. Ernie attended schools in the Palmer area and received his 8th grade diploma in 1944. He worked for neighboring farmers and Midwest Limestone at Gilmore City, Iowa. He married Genevieve Thompson of LuVerne, Iowa on February 19, 1950 in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Palmer. They have four children, David, Roger, Diane and Ruth, their pride and joy. They made their home in Pocahontas where they became members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Ernie had a quiet faith in God and a desire to support his church and served in many capacities and on the Church Council. They purchased their home on the east edge of Pocahontas and lived there for 62 years. In 1952, Ernie began cutting trees with a chain saw in the trunk of his car and a borrowed trailer. He built up the Schoon Tree Service with his hard work and a reputation of doing good work. He was known as “The Tree Man” around the area, but he was also a “jack of all trades” and master of most, which was apparent in his grain bin moving, painting, or putting metal on buildings, or driving gas transports, you name it, Ernie would do it. Ernie was a member of the Pocahontas Fire Department for 17 years, after that his son, Roger Schoon and grandson, Adam Schoon were firemen. Upon retiring, Ernie was proud to have his grandson, Travis Schoon carry on the tree business. Ernie and Gen enjoyed many years of traveling around the country in their RV or on bus tours, making friends as they went. They wintered in Weslaco, Texas for 13 years. Ernie loved to tease and have fun, his friends often greeted him with “Are you staying out of trouble, Ernie?” or “Oh! Oh! Here comes trouble.” In his leisure time, Ernie enjoyed making and hanging bird houses and feeding the squirrels in his yard and riding his Honda motorcycle. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Genevieve of Pocahontas; sons, David (Barbara) Schoon of Merrit Island, Florida, Roger (Janet) Schoon of Twin Lakes, Diane (Paul) Havick of Chariton and Ruth (K.C.) Perin of Orlando, Florida; ten grandchildren, Heather (Matt) Epps, Angela Schoon, Tom Beckel, Kelli (Will) Gould, Travis (Heather) Schoon, Adam Schoon ,Lindsey Schoon, Megan (Nick) Hollings, Melissa (Josh) Siress and Evan Havick; six great-grandchildren, Reyann Epps, Gage Beckel, Kyler and Madelynn Siress and Zoey and Avery Schoon and brother, Leroy (Judy) Schoon of Cherokee.
