Irene A. Tasler, 82, of Des Moines passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Tompkins Memorial Health Center.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday September 27, at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with Rev. Bill Kanne officiating. Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge.
Irene is survived by her four children, Jeannie (Paul) Havnen, Bill (Ellen) Tasler, Lonnie McClain, Jim (Sara) Tasler; eight grandchildren, Marc (Heidi) Havnen, Molly (Todd) Cox, Joe Tasler, Jenny McClain, John McClain, Kenny Tasler, Konrad Tasler and Loralei Tasler; six great-grandchildren, Gracie, Chance, Sophie, Paige, Adrianna and Emily.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Edward and Mildred Pence Allen, Herman Tasler; two sisters, Jeanette Smith and Lucille Titus; four brothers, Donald, Roy, Dwaine, John Allen; and her grandson, Frank Tasler.
Irene Tasler was born on December 21, 1929, in Lake City, Iowa.
She grew up in Lake City, graduating from high school in the class of 49' often referred to as the "49ers" A few years later, she met Herman Tasler at a local roller-skating rink, as the two both shared a love of roller skating. Herman and Irene married on January 29, 1951, and were married for 25 years. Upon their marriage, the couple moved to Farnhamville, and began farming until they moved to Des Moines in 1960. They were blessed with four children, Jeannie, Bill, Lonnie and Jim.
While raising their family, they enjoyed summer camping on weekends, road trips around the country and their favorite venture as a family to Riverview Park. Irene found joy in collecting bells on her journeys, making for a large bell collection. She also loved clocks and timepieces, every night falling asleep to the sound of at least ten wind-up clocks. Irene served as a Den Mother for her youngest son Jim during his time with Boy Scouts. What she loved most was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Irene worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Company of Des Moines for 25 years and retired in October of 1987. Being an energetic lady, she continued working at Target Co. for 15 more years until retiring in 2002. She enjoyed bowling in the evenings on her All-Women's Bowling League for many years.
She and her longtime companion, Leonard Carter of 35 years, enjoyed annual road trips to Texas, 3rd Armored Reunions in various states, snowmobiling and cheering for the Iowa Buccaneers hockey team as season ticket holders.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
