John Wickland
(January 3, 1842 – April 1, 1934)

Obituary
John Wickland was born Jan. 3, 1842, at Olme, Varmland, Sweden, where he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and where he grew to manhood. He came to the United States at the age of 30, or in the year 1873, and made his home for some time at Rockford, Ill. December 26, 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Maja Kaisa Jehnson. Six years later, or in 1878, he moved, together with his family to this community and homesteaded a place about 3 miles north of Lohrville. Four years later, 1882, the Skaraborg Lutheran church was organized. He joined this organization the same year and became one of the charter members and a pioneer in the Lutheran church work in this community and had remained faithful to this confession during his life. God blessed him with many years of grace and spiritual gifts as well as temporal – “Jehovah gave, Jehovah hath taken away” can be applied to Mr. Wickland. Four of his children passed away before him and Mrs. Wickland preceded him in death 17 years. These, together with many other disappointments fell upon his lot. But during the various trials of life he did not loose his faith in God, but clinged to his Bible. A few years ago his eyes failed him. He could hardly tell the difference between night and day. With is exception his health was good until a few days before the Lord called him. He passes away April 1, at noon, at the grand old age of 92 years, 2 months and 21 days, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. W. Peterson at Montezuma, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his death his children: Anna Charlotte Dexter of Waukegan, Ill.; Mrs. Elin Mathilda Peterson of Montezuma, Hilma Elisabeth of Chinock, Mont.; and Mrs. August Nelson of Rockwell City, 30 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. Peace be on his memory. Source – Rockwell City Advocate and Calhoun County Republican, Rockwell City, Iowa, Thursday, April 12, 1934, p.3
