Niels Christian Nielsen was born May 24, 1857 at Viele, Denmark, and died Dec. 17, 1937, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. W. Drommer of Pomeroy, at the age of 80 years, six months and 23 days. He grew to manhood at his native home, becoming a baker. In youth, he was confirmed in the Lutheran church but after coming to Pomeroy joined the Presbyterian church of which he remained a member until his death. July 6, 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Swanson. They continued to live in Viele for three years, when they left Denmark for America. They arrived in Pomeroy in November 1881, and Mr. Nielsen worked as a carpenter in town for several years. They then purchased a farm three miles southeast of Pomeroy where they lived until 1914 when they built a new, modern home in Pomeroy. They observed their golden wedding anniversary July 6, 1928. Three years later, Nov. 10, 1931, Mrs. Nielsen died. Mr. Nielsen served for many years as a school director in Sherman Township and for about 25 years as Township Clerk. After moving into town he served for several terms as town councilman and for a short time as mayor. Surviving are two children, Swan L. Nielsen of Lohrville and Mrs. Christine Drommer of Pomeroy, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and other relatives.
