Gustav Adolph Schoepke
(November 29, 1877 – January 6, 1939)Obituary
Gustav Adolph Schoepke was born Nov. 29, 1877, in Schoenlanke, Germany. His parents were Ferdinand and Paulina Schoepke. He was baptized according to the Lutheran faith in infancy. At the age of five, he came to the United States with his parents and brothers and sisters. The family settled at Varna, Ill., where his father worked on the railroad. He was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Varna, Ill, on Palm Sunday 1891, by the Rev. Zippel. In 1901 Mr. Schoepke and his father started farming in this community, which farm remained his home until the time of his death. On Feb. 4, 1904 he was united in marriage with Lena Good of Rockwell City by Rev. Walter Georg. To this union were born six children; Grace Boegler, Menno, S. D.; Lela Merrill, Rockwell City; Carl, who died in infancy; Agnes Redman, Bremerton, Wash.; Mable Wyant, Rockwell City; and Eleanor Schoepke, Rockwell City. Two brothers, Herman Schoepke of Rockwell City and Ferdinand Schoepke of Varna, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Otto Wendt of Rockwell City, also mourn his passing. One brother, William Schoepke, preceded him in death. There are also two grandchildren, James Paul Redman and Richard LeRoy Merrill. Twelve years ago Mr. Schoepke took treatments for a cancerous condition. After the period of a year or more these treatments were discontinued, and until last summer he was apparently in good health. About the first of August of the past year this condition reappeared and he underwent an operation Aug. 27. After his return from the hospital, he slowly grew weaker, although there were often signs of improvement. But God relieved him of his pain when He called him home to Himself Jan. 6, at 7:45 p.m. at the age of 61 years, 1 month and 7 days.
