Mary Hesser
(January 27, 1847 - October 14, 1933)

Obituary
Mrs. Mary Hesser died suddenly at her home at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 17 days. A paralytic stroke was the cause of her death. It was the third stroke, the second occurring about a year and a half ago, since which time her health had been poor. Mrs. Hesser, or Grandma Hesser, as she was known to both young and old, had been very active in all community activities, particularly in church circles, until the past year when, because of her advanced age and illness, she was forced to give up the many duties which she had enjoyed. A member of the Methodist Church for 70 years, Mrs. Hesser had at one time or another held practically all of the offices in the various church organizations. She filled the office of Sunday School Superintendent for over 13 years. For several years she was correspondent for the Manson Journal and the Rockwell City Advocate. Mary Watts was born January 27, 1847 in Union County, Ind. In 1865 she was united in marriage to J. M. Marshall, who died in 1871. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Ida Farmer, who lives in Des Moines. The deceased was married in Louisa County, Iowa in 1876 to J. H. Hesser, who preceded her in death. To this marriage was born one son, Clark, who died in 1925. Other than the daughter, Mrs. Farmer, three stepsons survive: Charles, with whom she had lived in Somers for 30 years; Harry, also of Somers, and Joel H. of Manchester, N. H. She also leaves six grandchildren: Marvin Farmer of Portland, Ore., Mrs. O. O. Volkert, Vivian Hesser and Eugene Hesser of Sac City and Keith Farmer and Oma Doris Farmer of Des Moines. One great grandchild, Robert Farmer, lives at Portland, Ore. Mrs. Hesser came with her family to Calhoun County in 1879 where she made her home on a farm until moving into Somers where she had spent the past 30 years.
