Richard Brugger Rites Held Last Friday

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Squires funeral home for Richard Brugger, who died Jan. 14 [1941] at the old farm home in Elm Grove township. The Rev. F.F. Robinson, pastor of the Methodist church, was the officiating clergyman. Burial was in the Lake City Cemetery.

Richard Brugger, youngest son of Albert F. and Mary Ann (Wunderly) Brugger, was born in the village of Ixel, Baden, Germany, on the 12th day of January, 1850. When he was just two years of age, his parents left the fatherland and came to the United States of America, establishing their home on a farm in Washington county, Wisc.

His parents were members of the Roman Catholic Church and raised their children in that faith. Throughout the years he never lost the spiritual and eternal realities of his early teaching.

In 1874, when a young man of 24 years, he came to Iowa, and lived with his brother Jeremiah for the following seven years.

April 2, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Binkert, and they settled on their farm in Elm Grove township where, during their later years they were assisted in the working of the farm by their son Edward. It was during the fall of 1937 that failing health compelled them to leave the farm and go to live with their daughter Josephine, Mrs. H. A. Yetter, of Estherville, Ia. They remained there under their daughter’s care until last August, when the serious illness of Mr. Yetter made it necessary for Edward to take his father back to the old farm home where he and his wife cared for him until the end came Tuesday, Jan. 14. He had attained the age of 91 years and two days.

Mr. Brugger, until late years, was an inveterate reader and was well versed in leading events and issues of importance. On all significant questions he was always able to express an intelligent opinion. Readers of the Graphic have enjoyed through these columns his interesting stories of historic events of the early day[s] in Elm Grove township.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. [Emma] Brugger, who on account of physical infirmities was unable to leave Estherville and attend the services. He is also survived by three sons: M.H. of Lake City, William G. of Scranton and Edward L. of Lake City; and by one daughter, Mrs. Josephine Yetter of Estherville. There are also six nephews, three nieces, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and many friends.
