Rev. Ervin R. Schlachtenhaufen

The Rev. Ervin R. Schlachtenhaufen, 92, a retired Lutheran clergyman formerly of Pomeroy, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at his winter residence in Vancouver, Washington. Funeral services were held Sunday, January 21, at Grace Lutheran Church, Tomahawk, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held, at the Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Vancouver, Washington, on Saturday, January 27.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Reiff Schlachtenhaufen; children, Paul, John, Joel, Sally, Daniel and Roy; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, the Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhaufen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Salome Hoh Schlachtenhaufen.

Ervin R. Schlachtenhaufen was born March 18, 1908, in Fernando, Minnesota. He married Gertrude Reiff in 1934. Upon graduation from St. Paul Lutheran Theological Seminary, he was ordained in 1931. During the next fifty-two years, he served ELCA Lutheran congregations in Good Thunder, Minnesota, Independence, Pomeroy, Des Moines, and Aniwa, Wisconsin. After he retired in 1973, he served the Presbyterian Church in Hogarty, Wisconsin until 1983. He served on the Board of Regents at Wartburg College, Waverly, from 1956 to 1960.

He maintained a summer home at Deer Lake, Tomahawk, Wisconsin. His zest for living was always present in his many and varied interests.
