Alpharetta (Workman) Earl, 99, of Lake City, died Thursday, October 22, at her home following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 24, at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lake City, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating.

Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden was in charge of arrangements. Music for Mrs. Earl's services was furnished by organist Miss Hester Crosswait, with Mrs. Herbert Doty and Mrs. David Plooster as vocalists who sang two duets - "In the Sweet By and By" and "Beyond the Sunset". The services concluded with one of Mrs. Earl's favorite hymns, "In My Heart There Rings a Melody".

Mrs. Earl was buried in her wedding gown, a handmade, pin-tucked off-white sheer cotton gown, trimmed in lace and fastened with tiny pearl buttons down the entire front. This gown was hand made by Mrs. Kackley in 1907.

Casket bearers were Mike Iler, Harold DeLong, Dwight Dial, Dr. Michael Schleisman, Rod Laidler and Robert Iler. Burial was at the Lanesboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Earl was born September 13, 1888, in Calhoun County, the daughter of Sanford Merrill and Dora (Sumner) Workman.

She graduated in 1906 from Lake City High School and received her diploma in 1988.

On December 25, 1908, she and John B. Earl were married at the home of her parents.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lake City, the Baptist Women's organization, the White Shrine of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines, the old Union Aid Society, the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Lake City Historical Society. She was active in various community affairs including the Lake City High School Alumni Association.

She was a life long resident of the Lake City area, and she lived on a farm that was designated a Century Farm.

She is survived by a son, Russell S. Earl, a daughter, Mrs. Robert C. (Martha) Sorenson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Bent Earl in 1948; a brother, William Clay; and two sisters, Orabelle and Rachel...
