Obituary of W.F. Crouse

William Francis Crouse was born in Ashland Co., Ohio, the 13th day of March 1841, and died at his home in Shawnee, Okla., Nov 8th, 1920 at the age of 79 years, 6 months, 25 days. At the age of 12, his father died and his mother with her family moved to Grant County, Wisconsin. Here he lived until he grew to manhood. In August 1862, he enlisted in Co. I, 25th Wisconsin Volunteers and was discarged Jun 7th, 1865. On April 12, 1866, he was united in marriage to Mary Crabtree. In 1869 they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near Greene. About the year 1880 they moved to Greene where he conducted a meat market for a number of years. On account of the failing health of his wife he later moved to Oklahoma where she died on October 6th, 1903. To this union were born 9 children, 7 of whom have preceeded him in death. On February 20th, 1907, he married Mrs Sarah Bradbury who with two daughters, Mabel Packard of Corning, California, and Florence Sproul of Greene, survive him. He is also survived by a foster daughter, Mrs Lillian Manning of Waterloo, Iowa; two granddaughters and a great granddaughter. There are also still living two brothers, John of Caldwell, Idaho, and J.B. of Greene, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Richards of Central City, Nebr., and Mrs John Tindall of Greene.

While living in Greene, Mr Crouse united with the Methodist Church of this place. He was a true and faithful Christian. He was also a member of the G.A.R. and the I.O.O.F.

The body arrived at Greene Snday morning from Oklahoma and was taken to the home of his daughter. Services were held at the home in Oklahoma and also at the Methodist church in Greene. At Greene they were in charge of E.A. Baker, assisted by Rev. C. S. Cole, a former pastor. Interment was made with the other members of the family at the West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock, Iowa.
