Wm. Buchholz 1846-1917
Obituary

Wm. Buchholz was born near Hannover, Germany, May 22, 1846. Died on Wednesday, February 14, 1917, at eleven o’clock p.m., aged 70 years 8 months and 23 days. He came to America with his parents in 1853, the voyage in a sailing vessel, consuming some nine weeks and his father getting sick died soon after their landing in New York City. The family came on direct to eastern Iowa, locating at Guttenberg.

In 1866, when about 20 years old, Mr. Buchholz came to Butler County and lived near Clarksville until he came to Greene about 10 years ago, in all making him a resident of Butler County for over fifty years. He was married in December, 1871, to Mary Brockman, who died in October, 1892. Four children were born to this union. Mrs. C.L. Schellenger, Clarksville; Mrs. Bert Ochiltree, Tipton, Iowa and W.H. Buchholz and Miss Lelah Buchholz of Greene. All survive him and were at his bedside during his last days.

Mr. Buchholz’s death bed was not one of pain, but of relaxing and weakening, he fell into the peaceful sleep that knows no wakening.

In his early years in Butler County, Mr. Buchholz engaged in farming in Fremont township, and owing to ill health moved off the farm and located in Clarksville where he was in the mercantile trade for about 15 years.

Over twenty years ago he and son W.H. Buchholz, established the Wm. Buchholz & Son mercantile business in Greene which has grown to be one of the finest department stores in Northern Iowa.

The funeral was held on Saturday at the W.H. Buchholz home and was largely attended, quite a number of old friends from Clarksville being present. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Rev. Chase conducted the service. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

The information I have is this family was from Linsburg, Germany, near Husum. I personally have not done this research. Rudolf J. Priepke was kind enough to let me photocopy some pages of a family booklet he had. He has now passed away.

I have a map of Linsburg on my website. Linsburg is a village that attended the church in Husum. Other villages also attended the Husum church. The map may be seen at
