JOSEPH BURTON IS DEAD

Tuesday evening, about 6 o'clock, word was passed about town that J. C. Burton ahd suddenly died while returning from a trip to the woods gathering walnuts. He was widely known in Clarksville and the surrounding country, having come to this locality in 1853 from the state of Indiana, thus having spent sixty-four years of his lifetime in this vicinity. He was born on February 7, 1844, and was therefore 82 years, 7 month and 14 days old.

With a party of friends he had taken a wheelbarrow and gone to the woods a half mile from his boarding house to gather walnuts. After gathering a couple of sacks he started to return home and had nearly succeeded in getting there, death overtaking him just outside the yard, and along the roadside at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Renn with whom he had made his residence for several years. Death overcame him very suddenly from weak heart action and perhaps overexertion. His wife died in 1909, and only a half-sister, Mrs Rachel Poisal, survive him of his immediate family.

His active life was spent farming and about twenty-four years ago he retired from active labor, moving to town. After the death of his wife he made his home with nis neice [sic], Mrs. John Renn. He was a familiar personage about town, nearly always about on Main street where he became acquainted with all who came to town, and to all of them his acquaintance was very acceptable. He was of jovial disposition, enjoyed his club room companions and enjoyed a day of sport at fishing. His absence will be noted by many.

Funeral services for the late J. C. will be held from the methodist church, today - Thursday - at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. H. E. Wilcox of Central City will be the officiating clergyman.
